Blown head gasket or not?

Looked at a car to buy. It's super cheap. The guys daughter drove it and it got too hot. Almost reclined on the water temp gauge. His mechanic told him blown head basket. However I see no watering the oil on the dip stick and no white smoke from exhaust. Sounds good too, no knocking. Could it really have a blown basket. I need to know before purchasing it.
